Richard Holmes

Dr. Richard Carl Holmes of Ironton passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2018. He was 87.

Richard was born on Nov. 23, 1931 in Rolla, the son of the late Richard Groves and Amy Catherine (Wilkinson) Holmes.

On June 28, 1958, he was united in marriage to Anna Marie Nichols who survives.  To this union seven children were born; Catherine Holmes of Farmington; Carl Holmes, who preceded him in death; Willa Frattini and husband, John of St. Louis; Paul Holmes of Overland Park, KS; Richie Holmes of Columbia: Amy Beaton and husband, John of Poplar Bluff; and John Holmes of Berlin, Germany.

Also surviving are six grandchildren and one great-grandson, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and son, Richard was also preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Price Holmes.

In 1949, he graduated from Piedmont High School as the class valedictorian.  He then attended the University of Missouri – Columbia where he enjoyed playing in Marching Mizzou.

Dr. Holmes was a 1955 graduate of the Washington University School of Dentistry.  He worked as a dentist in the Arcadia Valley for 41 years, retiring in 1996.  He served his community by providing low-cost and free dental care, as well as serving with the Elks Mobile Dental Care Van.

He was a member of Ste. Marie du Lac Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Knights of Columbus.  Dr. Holmes also was a member of the Arcadia Valley Elks Lodge, serving as Past Exalted Ruler.  He was a member of the Arcadia Valley Eagles, a past member of the Arcadia Valley Community Betterment, Rotary Club, the Do-Si-Do Square Dancers, the Pilot Knob Water Board, 67 Gun Club and the NRA.  He was also a member of several poker and pinochle card groups.   He loved high school basketball and was a proud Arcadia Valley supporter.  Dr. Holmes was loved very much and will always be missed.

A funeral mass was held on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 at 10 a.m. from Ste. Marie du Lac Catholic Church with Father Jim Unterreiner officiating.

Visitation was on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bryson Funeral Home.  Interment was in the Middle Brook Catholic Cemetery.   Memorials may be made to the Middle Brook Catholic Cemetery.
