David “Possum” Russell Hurt

David “Possum” Russell Hurt of Middlebrook passed away in St. Louis on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. He was 74.

He was born on May 25, 1944 in Middlebrook, a son  of the late of Benjamin “Frank” and Ollie Mae Knowles Hurt. On Oct. 19, 1974, David was united in marriage to Linda Myrene Loker, who survives.

Also surviving are a special grandson, Joshua Restivo; two brothers-in-law, Roy Daniel (Cindy) Loker of Hazelwood, Paul (Chris) Loker of Salem; two sisters-in-law, Julie Loker and special friend John of Mt. Grove, and Lori Loker of Pevely; and many loving nephews, nieces, family members and friends.

Possum, as he was known by all who knew and loved him, was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers, Elize Hurt, Delbert Hurt, Floyd Hurt, Francis Hurt, Elmer Hurt, Jim Hurt, Frank Hurt, Larry Hurt, and James McKinney; and three sisters, Annie Jones, Verna Mae Creech, and Juanita Hawkins.

He attended Ironton High School and went to welding school afterwards where he excelled. After learning the welding trade, he went to work for the Laborers Union 916, where he retired in 1998.

David was an avid racing fan and had a passion for racing. He built and drove race cars at the Sportsman Track and was Sportsman Track Champion in 1976.

Possum attended The Big Church, “The Mountain” as he called it. He loved the outdoors and being surrounded by God’s creation is where he had the strongest connection to his Lord.

Possum was a very special and loving person and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life for David was held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 1 p.m. from the Cole Family Chapel. Visitation was held on Friday, April 26, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Officiating the services was Pastor John Canterbury.

Interment was in Iron Mountain Cemetery.
