Sister Mary Paul Schmidt

Sister Mary Paul Schmidt

Sister Mary Paul Schmidt (born Alberta Rose Schmidt) passed away on Monday, April 29, 2019 at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton.  She was 91.

She was born on Nov. 23, 1927 in St. Louis, the daughter of John Schmidt and Appolonia Hortschitz, who both preceded her in death.

Alberta Rose Schmidt entered the Sisters of St. Mary, SSM (now the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, FSM), in 1943, receiving the name Sr. Mary Paul.

She served in the Ironton area for 42 years (1954-1996), at St. Mary of the Ozarks Hospital in Ironton and at Arcadia Valley Hospital in Pilot Knob. She served as sacristan, pharmacy assistant, surgical aide, and OR technician.

Sr. Schmidt is survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and five sisters.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2019, in The Sarah Community Chapel.

Connie Ruth (Eudy) LaPlant

Connie LaPlant

Connie Ruth (Eudy) LaPlant of Arcadia passed away in Potosi on Wednesday, April 17. She was 78.

She was born on April 12, 1941 in Sebula to the late Carl and Lela Lewis Eudy.

In June 1958 Connie was united in marriage to Dennis LaPlant. To this union two children were born, Sherrie Palmer of Weatherby Lake, who survives, and Lisa LaPlant, who preceded her in death.

Surviving Connie is one daughter, Sherrie (John) Palmer; three brothers, Earl Eudy of Ironton, Roger (Connie) Eudy of Midway, FL, Gary (Deborah) Eudy of Belleview; one granddaughter, Erin (David) Burnette of Lincoln, NB; two twin great-grandsons, Ethan and Parker Burnette; and many loving nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Lisa LaPlant; one brother, Bennie Eudy; and one sister-in-law, Virginia Eudy.

Pamela Gail (Mickan) Williams

Pam Williams

Pamela G. Williams of Lee’s Summit passed away suddenly from a heart attack on Sunday, April 7, 2019. She was 62.

Pam was born on Aug. 6, 1956 in Granite City, IL, and moved to Annapolis in the fifth grade where she stayed until graduating high school.

Pam is survived by her husband, David, who loved her unconditionally for 43 years. Their whirlwind love affair began in 1975.

Pam lived a wonderful and adventurous life while David served in the US Marine Corps for 20 years.

They found their home in Lee’s Summit, where they raised two children, Ryan, 40, and Sarah, 29. They found joy in being with their three grandchildren and spending time with their family.

She was preceded in death by her father, James G. Mickan.

James r. Graham, Sr.

James Graham

James R. Graham, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2019. He was 83.

He was born on  Feb. 12, 1936, in Chattanooga, TN, to Albert and Clara Graham.

James was one of eight children, Elizabeth Graham, Geraldine (Jo) Pace, Jesse (Bud) Graham, Martha Graham, James (Jim) Graham, Florence Graham, Ruby (Joyce) Steidel, and Phillip (Harold) Graham.

James grew up in the Portageville area.  After his tour of duty with the US Army in Korea, he moved to California where he met Carol Beth Gibson (Armstrong).  When he asked her to be his wife, he also took her three boys and two girls as his own.  Within a few short years of their marriage in June of 1962, four more boys had been added to the family. Carol preceded him in death in April 2002.

Matthew Keith Blevins

Matt Blevins

Matthew Keith Blevins of Ironton passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019 in Cape Girardeau.  He was 47.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1971 in Killeen, TX, a son of Elijah and Linda Joan Wadlow Blevins.

Surviving are two children, Allison and Ian Blevins; his father, Elijah Blevins; one brother, Adrian and wife Suzanne of Ironton; his loving companion, Chrissy Dean; two nieces, Alexis and Emily; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Joan Blevins.

For most of his life, Matt worked as a carpenter. He was a 1992 graduate of Arcadia Valley High School.

A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. from Cole Family Funeral Home with Pastor Marty Blakey officiating. Interment was in the Wadlow Cemetery. Visitation began on Monday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Thomas Leroy Ragan

Tom Regan

Thomas Leroy Ragan of Pilot Knob passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 in Desloge. He was 72.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1946 in Beloit, WI, the son of the late Clarence and Mildred (Holford) Ragan.

On June 7, 1975, he was united in marriage to Beatrice Kay Willhelm, who survives.

To this union three children were born, Carla Ragan of Birchtree, Angela Crider and husband, Michael of Ironton, and Robert Ragan, who preceded him in death.

Tom is also survived by seven grandchildren, Aaron, Andrew, Jamie, Andrea, Brianna, Dustin, and Karlena;  six great-grandchildren, Elijah, Brylea, Andy, Tatum, Reid, and Reagan; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by six sisters, his twin Mary who died at birth, Diana Doty, Shirley Radford, Ida Lou Wickham, Jean Sutton, Lorraine Tyler; and two brothers, Robert Johnson and Raymond Wickham.

Thomas Holland, Jr.

Tom Holland

Thomas Holland, Jr. of Ironton passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 in Farmington. He was 87.

He was born on March 8, 1932 in Granite City, IL, a son of the late Thomas Laddell and Clemma Robbs Holland.

On March 12, 1960, Tom was united in marriage to Rosie Huff Holland. To this union two children were born, Thomas Holland III (Tammy) Holland of Centerville, and Bobbi Jackson, who preceded him in death.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, and a host of loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Holland.

Tom served his country proudly in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Hopewell Lodge 239 AF & AM, O.E.S., the VFW, and the Cowboy Church in Fredericktown.

For many years Tom was a truck driver, and also served as Deputy Sheriff and Bailiff in Iron County.

Douglas “Mac” MacArthur Newsom

Douglas “Mac” MacArthur Newsom of St. Peters, formerly of Arcadia, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019 in O’Fallon. He was 77.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1942 in Paragould, AR, a son of Jeff and Ruth Gill Newsom.

On May 25, 1963, he was united in marriage to Alice Polhman Newsom, who survives.

To this union two children were born; Douglas “Rocky” (Abby) Newsom of Farmington and Patricia Ann Brinkley.

Surviving are two brothers, Raymond (Peggy) Newsom of Vandallia, IL, Harold (Barb) Newsom of MI; two sisters, Bessie Miller of TX, and Mary Krueger of St. Louis; four grandchildren, Katryn Brinkley, Jake Brinkley, Nick Newsom, and Nathan Gonz; and a host of other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Brinkley; and one brother, Jim Newsom.

Doug owned and operated his own machine and metal fabrication business.

Charles Robert Hutson II, known to most as “Bob” passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at his residence in Arcadia. He was 67.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1951 in Evansville, IN, the son of the late Charles Robert and Betty June (Halcomb) Hutson.

On June 21, 1980, Bob was united in marriage to Alta Marie Gay, who preceded him in death on Sunday, March 31, 2019.    

He is survived by his brother, Bruce Hutson and wife Tonya of Poplar Bluff; his nieces, Melissa Burgan, Sara Allegree and Amber Edgy; nephews, Toby Gray, Jonathan Gray, and Adam Hutson; and great-nieces and nephews, Devon, Taylor, Ashley, Nate, Trevor, Damian, Connor, Carson, Savannah, Addison and Drake; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.  Bob was preceded in death by his nephew, Ryan Hutson.

Bob was 1970 graduate of Galesburg Senior High in Galesburg, IL, and he earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Monmouth University.

Alta Marie Hutson

Alta Marie Hutson

Alta Marie Hutson of Arcadia passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2019 in St. Louis. She was 64. She was born on Nov. 11, 1954 in Ironton, the daughter of the late John and Norma (Milburn) Gay. On June 21, 1980, she was united in marriage to Bob Hutson, who passed away four days after her death. Alta is survived by two brothers, Michael Gay and wife, Tammy, of Pilot Knob, and Larry Gay and wife Christy of Columbia; three nieces, Melissa Burgan, Sara Allegree, and Amber Edgy; three nephews, Toby Gray, Jonathan Gray, and Adam Hutson; 11 great-nieces and nephews, Devon, Taylor, Ashley, Nate, Trevor, Damian, Connor, Carson, Savannah, Addison and Drake; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Ryan Hutson. Alta was a graduate of Arcadia Valley High School. She worked as a manager for Walmart for over 30 years. In the past, Alta attended Arcadia Valley Assembly of God Church. Alta most enjoyed taking care of the people she loved.
